UFS 4.0 specifications

Samsung is using its 7th-generation V-NAND memory and a proprietary controller on the “industry’s highest-performing” UFS 4.0 storage solution. It allows for sequential read speeds of up to 4,200 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s. According to the company, UFS 4.0 will support a bandwidth of up to 23.2Gbps per lane. That’s twice as much as the UFS 3.1 solution. “That much bandwidth is perfect for 5G smartphones requiring huge amounts of data processing,” Samsung said. It expects UFS 4.0 to find usage in “future automotive applications, AR, and VR” products. UFS 4.0 will also bring about huge efficiency gains. Samsung touts a sequential read speed of 6.0 MB/s per mA (milliampere) of electrical current. This marks a 46 percent improvement over the previous generation, allowing for longer battery life. With so much on-device data processing, battery life has become one major concern with mobile devices. It’s nice to see these kinds of improvements. Samsung will offer UFS 4.0 mobile storage solutions in various capacities, going all the way up to 1TB. There haven’t been many smartphones with 1TB of built-in storage capacity. The arrival of the UFS 4.0 high-performance storage solution could finally change that. To ensure that manufacturers will not have to allocate extra space for the storage unit inside their devices, the Korean firm is making it quite compact too. The maximum dimension of the package will not exceed 11 x 13 x 1 mm.

Samsung could use UFS 4.0 tech on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4

As said earlier, Samsung will begin the mass production of the UFS 4.0 mobile storage solution in the third quarter of this year. That is when we are expecting the company to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldable smartphones as well. So there’s every possibility that the 2022 Galaxy foldables will debut the new storage tech. If not, it certainly wouldn’t overlook the Galaxy S23 series next year. Of course, UFS 4.0 is not a Samsung-exclusive tech. UFS is a flash storage specification standard developed by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association. This type of mobile storage solution is found in most Android smartphones and other electronic products. Current flagship products use UFS 3.0 or UFS 3.1. Samsung says it’s working with various tech companies to make UFS 4.0 available to a wider range of devices. You can expect to see the new storage solution in many flagship Android smartphones in 2023.
